Dave Grohl Wrote A Song For Josh Homme To ‘Embarrass Him’

Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl wrote a song to embarrass his friend Josh Homme on stage.

Grohl joined the ‘Josh Homme & Friends’ event to play a song on stage for his friends. The event was held in support of the Sweet Stuff Foundation and the evening also featured performances from Beck, St. Vincent, and The Kills.

The Queens Of The Stone Age singer invited Grohl to the event for a song. It turns out that the Foo Fighters frontman chose a song that would embarrass Homme but in a different way. He explained how he picked a song:

“When Josh asked me to come out and play tonight, I said, ‘Of course.’ And then I spent a couple of days trying to figure out like, ‘What the f*ck am I gonna play?’ My first idea that I had… I was like, ‘You know what? This shit’s funny – I’m gonna come out and I’m gonna do a f*cking Doja Cat song’. And I spent f*cking days trying to learn that f*cking ‘B*tch, I said what I said‘ [song, ‘Paint The Town Red’]. There are so many lyrics to that song – like maybe more than ‘The Sound Of Silence,’ which is a lot! I woke up at like two o’clock in the morning – I was like, ‘I’m not gonna roll out ‘Everlong’ for the thousandth time.'”

Instead of choosing a popular song to sing on stage, he did something he considered ‘really uncool.’ Grohl continued:

“So I did something that’s maybe considered really, really uncool. But I wrote a song that’s really genuine and earnest about my friend Josh. We’re all here for this one big reason, but I don’t know if we’d all be here if it weren’t for that guy. And when that guy fucking calls you and says, ‘Hey, I’m doing something’… he’ll kick your ass if you don’t, basically. So I thought, ‘I’m gonna write a song about him and embarrass him in front of all of his friends’… by actually singing about how much I fucking love you, man. And I’ve never even sung it out loud.”

The Sweet Stuff Foundation was established in 2013 to support professional musicians, recording engineers, and their families with disabilities.

Homme’s Thoughts About Reuniting Them Crooked Vultures

Grohl, Homme, and Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones formed Them Crooked Vultures in 2009 and went on a hiatus the following year. In 2022, the trio reunited for a show to pay tributes to the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins.

More recently, Homme expressed his enthusiasm about reuniting his supergroup. He said:

“I would love to reunite Them Crooked Vultures. However, it’s not really my responsibility to make that happen; that’s Dave’s responsibility. My role is to perform, write lyrics, and create music. I really want it to happen – Dave is aware of this. I’m eager for Them Crooked Vultures to reunite and have one more go at it.”

The trio’s only self-titled album was released in 2009, and they haven’t released any new music since then.
