Wolfgang Van Halen recently commented on his conflict with David Lee Roth. He addressed the tension in a statement shared on Rolling Stone.
The statement focused on Van Halen’s response to Roth’s lengthy YouTube rant from the previous year. In that rant, Roth had insulted Wolfgang and referred to him dismissively as “this fuckin’ kid.”
“I didn’t put a two-hour-long YouTube rant of completely unfounded lies about said person out of nowhere,” Wolfgang said. “So I don’t know what I did, but that’s certainly where I sit.”
Van Halen emphasized his current position in life and career. He noted that he has moved beyond such conflicts.
“I’ve always been a punching bag,” he continued. “So, it’s just whatever… I’m a 34-year-old married man with a third Mammoth album. I’m not a kid.”
Wolfgang’s measured response comes after months of public tension between the two musicians. The conflict intensified in early 2024 and represents a continuation of long-standing drama within the Van Halen legacy. This drama has now extended to the next generation following Eddie Van Halen’s passing.
Van Halen News Desk reported that Roth’s YouTube rants targeted Wolfgang with accusations of nepotism and claims about his behavior during past Van Halen concerts. Roth alleged that Wolfgang complained about not receiving enough attention during shows. He also accused Wolfgang of retaliating by ejecting Roth’s guests from two concerts. These attacks were described as especially harsh, with Roth even referencing events from Wolfgang’s childhood in his criticism.
Wolfgang’s public demeanor has remained notably calm and diplomatic throughout the ordeal. During a radio interview on 99X in Atlanta, Wolfgang addressed Roth’s comments. He stated, “I guess I’m honored he even thinks about me as much as he seems to.” Wolfgang suggested that Roth’s claims should be taken skeptically, referencing previous dubious statements Roth has made about his contributions to Van Halen.
Wolfgang acknowledged the deeper family dynamics at play. He recognized that he inherited a conflict that predates his own involvement. Wolfgang explained: “I seem to have been born into this Van Halen drama that has come way before me. And I guess now that my dad isn’t here to be a target, I guess he went to the next best thing.”
The contrast between Roth’s aggressive tone and Wolfgang’s restrained responses has resonated with observers. They have noted that Wolfgang’s accomplishments and measured approach stand in stark contrast to the former frontman’s provocative YouTube campaign. This latest statement from Wolfgang suggests he remains focused on his own musical career with Mammoth WVH rather than engaging in prolonged public disputes.
