Weird AI Yankovic recently spoke to Variety and talked about his biographical parody film ‘Weird: The AI Yankovic Story.’ According to Yankovic, the Queen biopic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ was one of his inspirations, but the film had a few things that bothered him.
In the interview, Yankovic said the following about biopics:
“Biopics historically have always been pretty inaccurate, which always bugged me. That’s one of the reasons why I decided to reach out to Eric Appel to write the screenplay.”
Touching upon the historically inaccurate things in ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ he continued:
“I’m a big Queen fan, and I liked the movie, and it won awards and was very popular. But it bothered me that there were so many artistic liberties taken, just flat out changing the facts, changing the chronology, just making it more quote unquote, cinematic, and I thought, ‘Okay, well, maybe I can do a biopic, but just throw facts out the window. Just go completely off the rails.'”
‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ received multiple awards after its screening, but according to a 2018 analysis by Rolling Stone, there were many inaccuracies in the biopic.
Yankovic’s ‘Weird: The AI Yankovic Story’ is the predicted winner for 2023’s Best TV Movie Emmy.
