Tommy Lee recently commented on the impact of guitarist John 5 joining Mötley Crüe. He addressed how the musician has energized the band following Mick Mars’ departure. His remarks were shared on John The Metal Mailman.

When asked if John 5 has brought new energy to the legendary rock band, Lee emphasized the guitarist’s exceptional talent and dedication to the group’s legacy.

“From the second he walked into the rehearsal room, here’s a guy who is a f*cking insane guitar player, first of all,” Lee said. “And second of all — I don’t know — other than KISS, Mötley is [one of his favorite bands] — he’s a fan. So he literally knew every single song. He’s, like, ‘What do you wanna play next? Let’s go.’ And he brought in this insane new fire, honestly, that we all needed. Everybody had to step up their game, man. It’s, like, ‘Woo, look out. This kid’s on fire.'”

Lee drew parallels between John 5’s passion and his own approach to music. He noted that maintaining enthusiasm as a fan of the craft drives continued excellence.

“That’s the beauty of him. And it’s very much like me,” Lee continued. “And I heard Sharon Osbourne talking about Ozzy the other day. I’m still a fan. So, I think when you remain a fan of what you do, of other bands that you’re inspired by, it’s this thing that we just keep sort of giving back. I don’t know how else to explain that. It’s kind of a weird one, but with John, he’s such a huge fan and such a talented guitar player that it literally just lit all of us up on fire. We were, like, ‘Oh, man. We are going to kill sh*t.'”

The comments highlight how John 5’s arrival has reinvigorated the band’s creative momentum. To understand the significance of this transition, it’s important to look at the circumstances that led to John 5 joining one of rock’s most iconic bands and how his background prepared him for this role.

John 5 officially joined Mötley Crüe in the fall of 2022 as a touring guitarist, according to Wikipedia. He replaced co-founding guitarist Mick Mars, who retired from touring due to worsening health issues. John 5, known for his previous work with Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson, was promoted to a full member of the band the following year. This solidified his place in Mötley Crüe’s lineup.

The transition was notably smooth, with support coming from an unexpected source. Guitar World reported that Mick Mars himself texted John 5 encouragement after his appointment. The legendary guitarist fully supported his successor, demonstrating that the transition was handled with respect for the band’s history. This endorsement from Mars helped validate John 5’s position within the band.

Since joining Mötley Crüe, John 5 has become an integral part of the band’s touring efforts and creative direction. Blabbermouth noted that the guitarist has participated in major tours, including Mötley Crüe’s world tour with Def Leppard that began in 2023. He continues to pursue his solo instrumental music career while balancing these multiple projects. His ability to deliver the energy and technical prowess that Mötley Crüe demands speaks to his versatility as a musician.

The addition of John 5 represents more than just a personnel change. It marks a new chapter for Mötley Crüe. With Tommy Lee’s endorsement and the band’s collective enthusiasm, John 5 has proven that he’s not merely filling a role but actively elevating the band’s performance and creative output. As the band continues to tour and create, John 5’s presence ensures that Mötley Crüe’s legacy remains vibrant and relevant for both longtime fans and new audiences.
