The Romantic Story Behind Ed Sheeran’s Song ‘Perfect’ Which Is A Serenade To Cherry Seaborn
English singer and songwriter Ed Sheeran‘s chart-hit, ultimate love song, and favorite track of 2018 for many, ‘Perfect’ gained a huge success when it first released thanks to its touching lyrics and an accompanying music video as emotional as the song itself.
As many of you know, there isn’t a complete album of Ed Sheeran without a love song that captures the essence of either heartbreak or the appreciation for the significant other. Sheeran has plenty of these songs that we all love and listen to throughout a break-up or even for the first dance in a wedding such as ‘Thinking Out Loud,’ ‘Give Me Love,’ and finally ‘Perfect.’
When was ‘Perfect’ released?
‘Perfect’ was the fourth single from Ed Sheeran’s third studio album, ‘Divide‘ which was released on 26 September 2017, following his second studio album, ‘Multiply’ and the album was so successful and loved that it won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.
What’s the background of this romantic song?
The emotional ‘Perfect’ was written about Sheeran’s wife, then girlfriend Cherry Seaborn with whom he has been together since July 2015, and they announced the exciting news of their engagement in January 2018.
On top of being inspired by his love for Cherry Seaborn, the track’s lyrics also based upon Ed Sheeran’s visit to James Blunt’s house in Ibiza, where the two musicians had listened to the rapper Future’s song ‘March Madness’ at six in the morning. That’s the moment when Sheeran came up with the lyrics, ‘Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song.’
Sheeran wanted to create the best love song with ‘Perfect’
There is no doubt that Ed Sheeran can touch his fans’ hearts with a deeply emotional song, however, he revealed in an interview with Zane Lowe that while writing ‘Perfect,’ his aspiration was to create the best love song of his career, a song that is even more romantic than ‘Thinking Out Loud’ which was the third single of ‘Multiply’ and the top love song if Sheeran before ‘Perfect.’ Regarding who is the main lyricist of the song, it was written by Ed Sheeran himself and was actually the first song he created for his third studio album ‘Divide.’
Here is what Ed Sheeran previously stated:
“I need to do it 100% me, so everyone will listen to that will be like, ‘Ah! He can actually do it!..’ I wanted to beat ‘Thinking Out Loud,’ ’cause I know that song was going to define me.”
The music video featured famous actress Zoey Deutch
The music video for ‘Perfect’ which was filmed at the Austrian ski resort of Hintertux was released on Sheeran’s YouTube channel on 9 November 2017. The video includes Zoey Deutch and Sheeran going on a ski trip with friends, and the two dancing in the snow, ending up in a cabin together, spending romantic moments. The video was directed by Jason Koenig, who also directed the video for ‘Shape of You’ which was a huge hit and peaked at number-one on the singles charts of 34 countries.
‘Perfect Duet’ was released including vocals from Beyonce herself
A duet by the iconic singer Beyoncé titled ‘Perfect Duet’ was released worldwide on 1 December 2017, which was an acoustic version of the original, with Beyoncé singing the second verse from a female perspective. Sheeran revealed that it was him who reached out to Beyonce to re-record the song and luckily she agreed.
