In fact, the rocker has also used songwriting to understand his complicated thoughts and survive his battle with mental issues.

Billie Joe Armstrong Wrote ‘Basket Case’ To Figure Out His Mental Issues

Billie Joe Armstrong’s struggle with mental health started at a very young age. As a child, he sometimes woke up in the middle of the night in great distress and took long walks to get rid of it. As time passed, these problems started increasing due to the hardships of fame, and the singer tried many solutions without knowing he was dealing with multiple mental disorders.

After a while, his battle with anxiety and panic disorder, impacted by his alcohol and drug addiction, began making him think he was losing his mind. While all these were going on, Armstrong encountered difficulties in understanding what was happening to him. One day, he took his pen and paper and began to write down all his uncontrollable thoughts, which would become ‘Basket Case.’

In a 2021 interview with Louder Sound, the vocalist revealed that he wrote the lyrics of ‘Basket Case’ on a day he felt like he was going crazy due to his state of mind. As he mentioned, he has struggled with panic disorder and anxiety without knowing it throughout his life. While having a tough day and thinking that he could not control the thoughts in his mind, he channeled his feelings, and this song came out.

Billie Joe Armstrong said the following about the track:

“‘Basket Caseis about anxiety attacks and feeling like you’re about to go crazy. At times, I probably was. I’ve suffered from panic disorders my entire life. I thought I was just losing my mind. The only way I could know what the hell was going on was to write a song about it. It was only years later that I figured out I had a panic disorder.”
