Sweet went on to explain the challenges he faced during the performance.

“Unfortunately I was under the weather and struggling quite a bit vocally so I’m obviously very bummed about that,” he continued. “My sincere apologies to all our fans in Uruguay. I feel much better today and we will see you tonight Buenos Aires!”

The band was scheduled to continue their South American tour with a performance in Buenos Aires following the Uruguay show.

Sweet’s vocal struggles in Uruguay reflect ongoing challenges the veteran musician has faced in recent years. He continues to perform Stryper’s demanding catalog of high-energy Christian metal songs.

Blabbermouth reported that the band has made the decision to tune down a half step to better accommodate Sweet’s aging voice. This adjustment helps reduce the strain on his vocal cords while performing the band’s traditionally high and chest-belted vocals that have been a signature element of Stryper’s sound since the 1980s.

The vocalist’s recent health challenges extend beyond vocal issues. Misplaced Straws revealed that Sweet underwent retinal detachment surgery. This contributed to delays and complications while writing the band’s new album. These health setbacks have added to the physical demands of maintaining a touring schedule at age 61.

Despite these challenges, Sweet has remained committed to delivering quality performances for Stryper’s dedicated fanbase. Ultimate Guitar noted that the band’s decision to adjust their tuning demonstrates their willingness to adapt their approach. They preserve the integrity of their music and live performances.

The incident in Uruguay highlights the ongoing balance between Sweet’s dedication to his craft and the realities of aging as a professional vocalist in the demanding world of heavy metal music.
