On a recent appearance on SiriusXM, Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks confirmed that she almost left Fleetwood Mac to work with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Her previous public statements show that Stevie Nicks has been a massive fan of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers since she first heard them on the radio at the beginning of her career with Fleetwood Mac. When the band released their self-titled debut album, Nicks had already joined Fleetwood Mac, but it didn’t prevent her from making a move to join Tom Petty’s newly formed group.

Mesmerized by the group’s unique sound, Stevie Nicks started to look for ways to meet Tom Petty and show that she was serious about her intention. The singer was eager to join Petty’s band even if it required her to leave Fleetwood Mac. When she couldn’t reach anyone from the band or the crew, she decided to work with their manager, Jimmy Iovine. So, she finally met Tom Petty and the other members. Although her relationship with Petty started cold initially, it evolved into a close friendship over the years.

Stevie Nicks confirmed what was publicly known before in her recent interview. She explained that she started her solo career to create a record that would sound exactly like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. She wanted to be the female version of the band. Nicks had many plans in her mind to reach them, and one of them was to contact their manager, Iovine. Thus, she approached him by an acquaintance, and they settled for dinner. Nicks told him that what she wanted to do was becoming the girl Tom Petty.

Stevie Nicks said the following in the interview:

“‘So what do you want to do in this solo career?’ and I said, ‘Well, basically, I just want to make a girl Tom Petty record.’ And I said, ‘Unless there’s some way that maybe I could be a member, maybe I could talk to them, maybe they need a girlfriend.’ He looks at me, and he’s like, ‘You’re joking, right?’ And I’m like, ‘I’m kind of joking but not completely.’ He goes, ‘You’d leave Fleetwood Mac for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.’

I said, ‘I might.’ So, he is like, ‘That’s not gonna happen, so moving on, what’s your next thing.’ I said, ‘Well, who produces Tom Petty?’ He said, ‘Jimmy Iovine.’ I said, ‘Can I talk to Jimmy Iovine?’ And he goes, ‘Okay, I can set you up for dinner with Jimmy.’ And I’m like, ‘Okay, when?’ He says, ‘Okay, I’m calling now. All right, you’re seeing him on Monday night.’ I said, ‘What I really want to do is I want to do a girl version of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.'”
