Steve Vai recently revealed that he has heard Eddie Van Halen’s unreleased recordings. He shared his thoughts on Alex Van Halen’s choice to work with Steve Lukather on reviewing these materials, as reported by Guitar Player.

Vai described his experience visiting Eddie Van Halen’s home studio and listening to the guitarist’s private recordings. He praised the quality of the unreleased material.

“I was up at Edward’s house once, in his studio. He invited me. He had a room filled with tapes, and he was pulling them out and we were listening. He would just sit and record and play. And I’m listening to this stuff and, I’ll tell you, nobody plays like they do when they’re sitting in their room alone. It was a whole library of tapes, and it was such great stuff,” Vai said.

Vai recalled suggesting that Eddie should release a solo album. However, the late guitarist had a different perspective on his creative output.

“I said, ‘Why don’t you make a solo record?’ But he always felt that Van Halen was his solo records,” he continued.

The guitarist expressed confidence in Alex Van Halen’s collaboration with Steve Lukather for working on Eddie’s unreleased material.

“So I’m sure there’s a lot there to play with, and it’ll be great. And I’m really glad Alex is working with Luke. More than anybody I knew through the years, Luke and Edward were like this. So that’s the best guy to help with this,” Vai concluded.

The collaboration between Alex Van Halen and Steve Lukather represents a significant undertaking in preserving Eddie Van Halen’s musical legacy. The project involves an extensive archive of the late guitarist’s work.

Guitar World reported that Alex Van Halen confirmed in a 2023 interview that he recruited Steve Lukather to help sift through Eddie Van Halen’s vast archive of unreleased recordings, estimating over 3,000 tapes. Lukather is acting as a “fellow musician” to identify the best material for potential release from this enormous collection.

The scope of Eddie’s unreleased material is staggering. Rolling Stone revealed that Eddie’s home studio housed thousands of reel-to-reel tapes from decades of solo jamming sessions, often recorded without overdubs. These recordings captured raw guitar ideas that he never intended for public release during his lifetime.

“There are thousands of them… just Edward noodling around,” Alex Van Halen explained about the extensive archive.

The choice of Steve Lukather for this project stems from a deep personal and professional relationship spanning decades. Ultimate Classic Rock documented that Steve Lukather and Eddie Van Halen shared a close friendship spanning over 40 years. They bonded over shared birthdays (both born October 6), mutual admiration for guitar playing, and frequent collaborations, including Lukather guesting on Van Halen tracks like “Can’t Stop Loving You” from the 1995 Balance album.
