Sharon Osbourne has criticized the music industry’s treatment of heavy metal bands. She argued that media outlets prioritize pop stars over rock acts in a recent interview with Music Week.

Her comments addressed the ongoing disparity in media coverage between pop music and heavy metal. This disparity exists despite the latter’s commercial success.

“As far as the media goes, heavy music isn’t popular,” Osbourne said. “It’s never been that popular with the media, though I think the 1980s was the closest it ever got.”

She elaborated on the current state of heavy music coverage. She pointed to a disconnect between commercial success and media attention.

“The media doesn’t write that there’s an absolute resurgence for this music right now, with bands headlining stadiums all over the world,” she continued. “They never get written about because it’s not in vogue right now.”

Osbourne then contrasted the treatment of pop stars with that of heavy bands.

“They focus on all the girls [pop stars] out there,” she said. “I’m not taking anything away from them, as they’re there for a totally different audience and great at what they do, but it’s just like a box of dolls, very cookie cutter. Meanwhile, these bands – heavy bands – have always been the bastards of the music industry.”

Osbourne’s criticism comes from decades of experience in the music industry. She has witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by heavy metal acts.

Wikipedia documented that Osbourne has played a significant role in shaping the metal genre. She particularly contributed through her creation of Ozzfest in 1996, which became a platform for both established and emerging heavy bands like Slipknot and Limp Bizkit. The festival provided crucial exposure for metal acts that struggled to gain mainstream media attention.

Her management career extends far beyond her work with husband Ozzy Osbourne. USC research revealed that Osbourne has successfully managed iconic acts like Gary Moore, Motörhead, and Lita Ford. This highlights her significant impact on the music industry across multiple decades.

Industry peers have recognized Osbourne’s unique approach to artist management. Industry sources noted her ability to navigate the business as a tough negotiator while maintaining a nurturing approach. Colleagues describe her as both “tough in business” and “loving, kind, and funny.”

Her recent comments reflect a broader concern about the music industry’s treatment of heavy metal. This genre continues to draw massive audiences worldwide despite limited mainstream media coverage. The disparity she highlights between commercial success and media recognition remains a persistent issue for metal artists and their representatives.
