Sammy Hagar Shares What He Thinks About Lynyrd Skynyrd As He Recalls His First Headline Show

Former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar posted a picture of the billboard that shows his first headline show in 1973 in the same venue that Lynyrd Skynyrd performed and reveals his opinions about the band and their music.

As you may know, Hagar has been the lead singer of Van Halen between the years 1985 and 1996. He recorded four studio albums with the band and one of them, ‘Balance,’ was allegedly the cause of his departure from Van Halen. But before he joined them, Hagar was a member of Montrose a new band founded by well-known session guitarist Ronnie Montrose. Until he was fired due to the conflicts between him and Ronnie, Sammy featured on the band’s first two albums, ‘Montrose’ and ‘Paper Money.’

Recently on Instagram, Sammy Hagar posted a picture of the billboard showing the details of a Montrose show in 1973 in San Francisco. In the caption of his post, Sammy stated that it was his first headline show which happened to be in the same venue as Lynyrd Skynyrd’s show on different days.

Here is what Sammy Hagar wrote in the caption of his post:

“Boy does this bring back some memories, my first headline show.”

In the comment section of his post, Hagar shared a short statement to respond to his fans’ questions about what he thought of Lynyrd Skynyrd and their music. He stated that Montrose didn’t play with Lynyrd Skynyrd on that particular date since they were playing on different weekends at the same venue. However, he mentioned that he performed together with them on several different occasions both with Montrose and as a solo artist. Sammy stated that he knew every one of them early on and he knows the current lineup of the band. He also praised their music by referring to them as one of the greatest American rock bands.

Here’s what Hagar added in the comment section:

“Just to clarify everyone’s asking about meeting Skynyrd etc. This is the billboard showing who is coming to Winterland Skynyrd in the outlaws for one wknd. And Montrose shows were a different weekend we weren’t playing together. But I’ve done many shows with Skynyrd in Montrose and as a solo artist I know them well I met every one of them early on and I know the band today and I love them one of the great American rock bands.”
