Former Van Halen singer Sammy Hagar recently shared an emotional birthday message for drummer Alex Van Halen, despite being largely omitted from Alex’s recent autobiography, as reported on Instagram.

The heartfelt message accompanied footage of an old Van Halen performance. It addressed the complex relationship between the former bandmates.

“Alex, I know these wonderful magical times have passed, and of course will never happen again,” Hagar wrote. “But I want to wish you all the peace, love and happiness in the world as well as a happy birthday.”

The post drew attention from Van Halen fans, with one commenting on the gracious nature of Hagar’s message despite Alex’s minimal mention of the singer in his autobiography.

“Those were true stories, my friend, not trash,” Hagar responded to fan comments. “That’s what a biography is supposed to be the truth.”

This exchange reflects the complex history between the former bandmates. It highlights Hagar’s gracious approach to their relationship despite past tensions.

Alex Van Halen’s autobiography Brothers focuses primarily on his bond with late brother Eddie Van Halen and the band’s early years, Ultimate Classic Rock reported. The book largely centers on the Van Halen brothers’ relationship and the formation of their legendary partnership, which may explain the minimal coverage of later band members.

Hagar’s tenure with Van Halen from 1985 to 1996 produced significant commercial success for the band. Billboard noted that the Hagar era delivered multi-platinum albums like 5150 and OU812 that produced major hits such as “Why Can’t This Be Love” and “When It’s Love,” demonstrating his substantial contribution to the band’s legacy.

The relationship between Alex and Hagar has seen both reconciliation attempts and ongoing tensions over the years. Rolling Stone documented that the two briefly reunited for a 2004 performance at Eddie Van Halen’s wedding and a 2007 Hagar tribute show. Yet tensions persist over band history and recognition.

Despite these complexities, Hagar’s recent birthday message demonstrates his willingness to extend goodwill and maintain respect for his former bandmate. He chose peace over past grievances in what many fans see as a mature and heartfelt gesture.
