Roger O’Donnell Quits The Cure’s Upcoming Shows For Health Reasons

In an Instagram post on November 15, The Cure announced a lineup change for the Shows Of A Lost World tour. This change is related to Roger O’Donnell’s health condition, but no clear information was given on the subject. The band’s statement reads as follows:
”For health reasons Roger will not be with on the latam leg of our Shows Of A Lost World tour. We are sure you will join with us in wishing him the speediest of recoveries. Mike Lord will be stepping in to play keyboards.”
How Roger Involved In The Cure
In an interview conducted by Synth History in May of this year, O’Donnell spoke about the time he joined The Cure and described his initial period with the band and said:
“They had just made a new record called, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. It had loads of keyboards on it. They didn’t have a real keyboard player in the band and realized going on tour was going to be tricky without one. The drummer at the time, Boris, was a really old friend of mine. He suggested me for keyboards. They said, ‘We need a keyboard player for five weeks in America, do you want to do it?’ I was in a band, The Psychedelic Furs, at the time. We had a tour and an album coming out. The thought of playing with my old friend Boris, I thought I’d like to do that. But I needed the money, I was a working musician. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to give all that up for five weeks.”
The Quit Of The Bassist Simon Gallup
This separation is not unusual for The Cure. Indeed, in the middle of 2021, the band’s bass guitarist of 40 years, Simon Gallup, left the group. Emphasizing ‘betrayal’ upon his departure, Simon had said the following in a statement published on Facebook:
“With a slightly heavy heart I am no longer a member of the Cure! Good luck to them all… I’m OK… Just got fed up of betrayal.”
