Rob Affuso Recalls How His Failed Audition For Bon Jovi Helped Him Join Skid Row

In a recent interview with The Rock N’ Roll & Coffee Show, drummer Rob Affuso talked about how his unsuccessful audition with Bon Jovi helped him meet Dave Sabo and become a member of Skid Row.

Before joining Skid Row, Rob Affuso was involved in many bands and solo projects. He was a member of the Sutton Thomas Band, played in Gilby Clarke’s debut solo record, and even worked on Guns N’ Roses icon Duff McKagan’s solo album. His introduction to what is now known as Skid Row happened when he auditioned for Bon Jovi in 1985 and met Dave ‘Snake’ Sabo.

The drummer played in Ozone Monday with many of his former Skid Row bandmates and has been involved in several other projects. However, Rob Affuso is currently working on his band Soulsystem, which he established while touring with Skid Row in 1992. Recently, the musician talked about how he crossed paths with Sabo while auditioning for Bon Jovi.

He said that despite being John Bon Jovi’s friend, Snake offered him to consider joining the new band they were forming after watching his audition. After receiving the sad news from Bon Jovi, Affuso reached out to Snake for his new band. He then went to audition and ended up destroying the drums of the musician they wanted to kick out. Ultimately, he got the job.

Rob Affuso’s words on how he got started with Skid Row:

“This was really before they had blown up, of course. So I get the audition, and I go there, and Snake was there just because he’s good friends with John and they had grown up together. So I did the audition, and then they came up to me and said, ‘Hey, you know I don’t know what’s going on here. Good luck to you here, but if not, we’re doing something, me and my buddy Rachel we’re putting a band together, we’d love to have you come join us.'”

He added:

“So obviously that didn’t work out with Bon Jovi, and I connected with Snake, went, and the poor guy, they had me audition on somebody’s drum set in a basement, and I hit the drum so hard I destroyed the drums. They looked at each other, and they’re like, how are we supposed to tell whatever his name is that we just auditioned the drummer on his drums. So well, and that was it, and that’s how I got the audition with Skid Row.”
