In a new conversation with Kevan Kenney, Rivers Cuomo revealed he offered Weezer hit, ‘Hash Pipe’ to Ozzy Osbourne first, but he turned it down.

“You initially offered ‘Hash Pipe’ to Ozzy Osbourne?” Kenny asked the singer. “Yeah, Yeah, in retrospect, it’s hard to remember but ‘Hash Pipe’ sounded nothing like what Weezer had ever done before. Never did we imagine it can be a Weezer song.”

Cuomo added, “I just wrote it but like, ‘Who should we give this?’ So I sent it to Ozzy Osbourne and he passed. So then, you know, it somehow ended up making the cut for our third record and became the first single and you know, we still play it today.”

Weezer released ‘Hash Pipe’ as a single in 2001 and included it on their third album, ‘The Green Album.’ Cuomo also talked about offering the song in an interview with Guitar World.

The rocker explained, “Once, I think it was in 2000, [Ozzy Osbourne] asked if I had any songs for him and I just happened to have written ‘Hash Pipe.’ He didn’t end up using it. In another reality, it might be interesting to hear him singing that song.”

Although Osbourne didn’t record a song by Cuomo, Weezer used a famous riff from Osbourne’s ‘Crazy Train’ in their song ‘Blue Dream’ on their latest album ‘Van Weezer.’

Rivers said the song originally had a different riff, but it wasn’t ‘the greatest guitar riff of all time.’ He added, “Coincidentally, at the same time, our manager said, ‘Hey, you guys should sample the ‘Crazy Train’ riff in a song.'”

In September, Weezer started their Voyage to the Blue Planet tour with Dinosaur Jr. and The Flaming Lips. They played the ‘Blue Album’ in full for its 30th anniversary. On September 4, they announced the ‘Super Deluxe Edition’ of the ‘Blue Album.’ It arrived on November 1, 2024.
