Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready recently opened up about his decision to embark on his first true solo project. He discussed his creative motivations and artistic growth in an interview with Billboard.
McCready’s comments came in response to a question about stepping outside his comfort zone with side projects versus his new solo endeavor. When asked about how it felt taking that step outside for the first time and how the rest of the band felt about it, McCready shared his perspective on creative challenges and personal growth.
“It feels scary in a great way. I’m a guy that always wants to push himself. I need to do that. I need to keep busy with stuff,” McCready said. “Pearl Jam is my entity and I live in it, but I’ve got time to do things so I want to fill that in with creativity. As an artist I want to push myself through different boundaries.”
The guitarist also revealed his commitment to developing new skills for the project. He particularly focused on vocal training.
“I’ve been taking singing lessons from this woman named Susan Carr here in Seattle for the past three years. I wanted to do something that forced me to sing, so I did a mini-rock opera within the context of this story,” he continued. “But I wanted to make sure I was f–king good!”
McCready expressed satisfaction with his solo experiment. He noted his hopes for audience reception.
“I feel proud about it. This is my solo experiment, who knows what it will turn into? I just hope that people dig it and it makes them want to listen to all the music from that time,” he said.
The project, titled ‘Farewell to Seasons,’ represents McCready’s graphic novel-turned rock opera. It marks his first venture into solo territory after years of collaborative side projects.
This ambitious undertaking represents the culmination of two decades of creative development. The project had its roots in ideas McCready began exploring during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The PRP reported that the album and graphic novel are scheduled for release on October 6, 2026. They are available for pre-order from Z2 Comics. The project marks a significant milestone as McCready’s first true solo effort, distinct from his previous collaborative ventures with bands like Walking Papers, Mad Season, and Levee Walkers.
The concept behind ‘Farewell to Seasons’ is deeply rooted in Seattle’s musical heritage. Louder Sound noted that the story portrays an alternate history of the Seattle music scene from the mid-1980s to mid-1990s. It captures the creativity, community, and chaos of grunge’s rise through original music told from the perspective of main character David Williams. This narrative approach allows McCready to explore the cultural landscape that shaped his own musical journey with Pearl Jam.
The project features an impressive roster of collaborators who bring diverse musical perspectives to McCready’s vision. Guitar World revealed that the album includes contributions from Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan, Dave Matthews Band’s Stefan Lessard, Fastbacks/Posies drummer Mike Musburger, and Chris Friel from McCready’s pre-Pearl Jam band Shadow. The guitarist also consulted with film producer Cameron Crowe during the early stages of development. This added another layer of storytelling expertise to the project.
The scope and ambition of ‘Farewell to Seasons’ reflects McCready’s commitment to pushing artistic boundaries while honoring the musical community that fostered his career. By combining visual storytelling through the graphic novel format with his rock opera compositions, McCready has created a multimedia experience. This serves as both personal artistic statement and historical tribute to one of rock music’s most influential movements.
