Original Pearl Jam drummer Dave Krusen has addressed speculation about potentially rejoining the band following Matt Cameron’s recent departure announcement. He shared his thoughts in an interview with Audacy’s The Daly Migs Show.
Krusen discussed his reaction to Cameron’s social media announcement and his openness to working with his former bandmates again.
“I got a message yesterday morning and I didn’t know what was going on,” Krusen said. “People are hitting me up and I’m like, ‘I have no idea what the band’s up to.’ I’m very surprised to hear that from Matt, but I’m excited for him and his new adventures, whatever he’s got planned.”
The drummer expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of reuniting with Pearl Jam members.
“Of course I would love to jam with those guys again, anytime, they know that,” he continued. “The [Rock and Roll] Hall of Fame thing was amazing and then sitting in with them, it was like no time had passed.”
“It’s just effortless getting to play with those guys so, of course, I would love to.”
Matt Cameron announced his departure from Pearl Jam yesterday via social media. This ended his 27-year tenure with the band.
Cameron’s departure marks the end of a significant era for Pearl Jam. He brought exceptional talent and experience to the group throughout nearly three decades of collaboration.
SF Gate reported that Cameron is a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee who also played in Soundgarden. Pearl Jam praised him as a “singular and true powerhouse of a musician and drummer” who “propelled the last 27 years of Pearl Jam live shows and studio recordings.” His dual membership in both Pearl Jam and Soundgarden made him one of the most respected drummers in the grunge and alternative rock scenes.
The timing of Cameron’s departure has led to speculation about the underlying reasons for his decision. Hollywood Life noted that fans have speculated that the increasingly demanding touring schedule may have influenced Cameron’s decision. He is a father of two with family commitments. The rigorous demands of maintaining a career with one of rock’s most active touring bands while balancing personal responsibilities may have contributed to his choice to step away.
SF Gate confirmed that Pearl Jam has not mentioned any plans for a replacement drummer at this time. This uncertainty has naturally led fans to wonder about potential candidates. Krusen’s name has emerged as a possibility given his history with the band and his recent positive comments about working with his former bandmates.
Cameron remains respected and celebrated by both fans and fellow musicians alike despite stepping away from the band. He leaves behind a legacy that helped define Pearl Jam’s sound for over two decades.
