Moby Admits Provoking Eminem To Start A Feud

Moby appeared on Steve-O’s Wild Ride podcast and talked about how he might have ignited hostility between him and Eminem back in the day. The musician recalled the harsh environment of the 90s music scene:

“Yeah, I kind of provoked him […] So if you remember, in the late 90s, there was this culture of weird misogyny and homophobia. Like, all of a sudden, rock bands were writing songs that were weirdly misogynistic and homophobic. And, having been raised by progressive hippies, I was a little surprised by this.”

He added that he disapproved of Eminem’s songs, considering his audience was young:

“And I spoke out about this because Eminem had songs about killing gay people, killing women and putting them in the trunk of his car, and I was like ‘Hmm, maybe this is not setting the best example for the 13-year-olds listening to Eminem.'”

Moby then mentioned his MTV interview and admitted this might have angered Eminem:

“And then, he got upset that I criticized him, and I’m going to throw myself under the bus a little bit, I thought this was really funny. But clearly, he did not. I was doing an MTV interview and the journalist asked me ‘Why does Eminem have such an issue with you?’ and I said ‘I don’t know, maybe he’s closeted and he just wants to make out with me.’ So, that might have been my equivalent of pouring kerosene on the fire. In his case, maybe he has a very good reason not to like me but I thought I was just being funny but clearly I’m not.”

Eminem released his song ‘Mosh,’ which criticizes George Bush and Iraq War. In a 2005 interview Moby said:

“I found myself respecting him for doing that. […] Honestly, if he retired, I think the world of music would be a poorer place. He’s a really fascinating public figure.”

When it was asked him what he thought of Eminem mocking Moby, he replied:

“To have the most successful musician in the world dress up like you in a video and sing about you in a song — it was honestly some of the best publicity I’ve ever had,”
