Mike Portnoy Shares What He Thinks About Dave Grohl’s Side Project, Them Crooked Vultures

Former Dream Theater drummer and current member of Sons Of Apollo, Mike Portnoy, revealed his thoughts about the side project of Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl.

Them Crooked Vultures is a supergroup and side project that formed in 2009, featuring Josh Homme, John Paul Jones, and Dave Grohl. They released a self-titled debut album in the same year, and they haven’t released an album since then.

In the conversation, Mike stated that the band was very cool and he liked how experimental they were as well as seeing them working together. Also, he mentioned that their style remind him of a modern-day Cream band.

Furthermore, Mike said that even though it was cool to see Josh sing everything, he pointed out that it would be great to see Dave Grohl sing alongside him and said that it would take the band in another level.

Here is what Mike Portnoy said:

“Here is another strange album – ‘Them Crooked Vultures.’ This was a side project with Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age, as well as Dave Grohl playing drums, and John Paul Jones on bass. And this was really cool.

I loved how experimental it was; they did this on the heels of the Queens of the Stone Age album that Dave played drums on – I think it was not too long after that that they came out with this. So I loved seeing them continue to work together.

And then bringing in John Paul Jones, and doing really experimental stuff – it was very much reminding me of modern-day Cream or something like that.”

He added:

“The only thing that bummed me out is that Josh sang everything. And not that there’s anything wrong with that because Josh is so cool – he’s such a cool singer – but I thought it’d been really cool for him and Dave to have been swapping the vocals and sharing the vocals. It just would have taken this to another level in terms of creativity.

But that’s my only minor complaint. Otherwise, it was a really cool project. They haven’t done anything else, so as of this moment, it’s kind of like a one-time thing but would be really cool to get something else from them.”
