Mike Portnoy recently shared his experience performing songs from Dream Theater’s catalog that he did not originally record. This was featured in an interview on ProMark Drumsticks.
During his time away from the band, Dream Theater released multiple albums with drummer Mike Mangini. Portnoy explained how he approaches these unfamiliar tracks now that he has rejoined the group.
“It’s been fun playing the songs that I didn’t record with Dream Theater,” Portnoy said. “They obviously made a lot of albums with Mike Mangini while I was gone. Luckily, the guys in the band gave me full freedom to kind of approach ’em how I’d like.”
Portnoy noted that while he generally stays faithful to Mangini’s original drum parts, he occasionally takes creative liberties where he feels a different approach might work better.
“I’m pretty faithful to his parts, for the most part, but there are moments here and there that it’s, like, ‘Oh, I don’t know if I would’ve played that,'” he explained. “So playing those songs has been a lot of fun, to be honest, ’cause it’s something very fresh for me.”
To understand the scope of Portnoy’s challenge, it’s important to recognize just how prolific Dream Theater was during Mangini’s tenure. Mike Mangini served as Dream Theater’s drummer from late 2010 through 2021. During this period, the band recorded five studio albums that became a significant part of the band’s discography, as reported by Blabbermouth.
The first of these albums, A Dramatic Turn of Events (2011), marked Mangini’s debut with the band. It is widely regarded as one of the strongest releases of his era. This was followed by the band’s self-titled twelfth studio album in 2013. Notably, this album marked the first time Mangini participated in the songwriting process alongside the rest of the band. The album debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200 chart and featured instrumental showcases that highlighted Mangini’s virtuosity as a drummer.
Over the next eight years, Mangini continued to contribute to Dream Theater’s evolving sound. He worked on albums including The Astonishing (2016), Distance Over Time (2019), and A View from the Top of the World (2021). The final Mangini-era album proved particularly significant when “The Alien” from that record earned Dream Theater their first Grammy Award. This achievement cemented the drummer’s impact on the band’s legacy.
Portnoy’s return to Dream Theater in October 2023 came after 13 years away. This meant he would need to master not just five albums’ worth of material, but also adapt to Mangini’s distinctive drumming style and approach. The band subsequently released their sixteenth studio album, “Parasomnia,” in February 2025 with Portnoy back on drums. This marked a new chapter in the band’s history. His willingness to honor Mangini’s work while bringing his own creative perspective demonstrates the professionalism and respect within the band as they navigate this significant transition.
