In a recent chat with The Metal Voice, Mike Portnoy talked about the differences between his and Mike Mangini’s drumming.

“He is very methodical,” the drummer said of Mangini. “He’s very conscious of what all four limbs are doing and the way he utilizes his independence. I’m not that kind of a drummer.”

Portnoy went on to detail the differences, “I’ve never been a guy that sits there and studies technique and the correct way to hold a stick, and all that kind of stuff. I go on feel, and to me, I try to make difficult music sound easy.”

“I think he has the tendency to make something that could be easy sound difficult. And I’m not trying to insult him; I’m just merely observing the difference in styles. And he’s the type that I think would play the same part exactly the same as it is on the album and do it consistently every night,” the musician explained.

He further stated, “I’m just not that kind of a drummer. I like to fly off the seat of my pants and be in the moment and do different things, just depending on how things are feeling.”

In late 2010, Mangini auditioned to replace Portnoy as Dream Theater’s drummer. He had played on three solo albums by James LaBrie. On April 29, 2011, Dream Theater announced Mangini as their new drummer.

Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess also previously reflected on how Portnoy differs from Mangini, saying, “One of them being relating to the way that he thinks. He’s so unusual. I think of him like a film director, like a movie director. He’s always thinking conceptually. He’s always thinking, ‘Oh, we played that part,’ and ‘that part could relate to this part’ and ‘if we do this, it’ll connect here.”

“And then we have this visual element,’ tying things together in ways that I don’t think about those things and nobody else does. And he does. And I feel like it brings, especially in our genre of music, it brings this beautiful element to everything, more things to sink your teeth into,” Rudess added.

Mangini played on all albums from ‘A Dramatic Turn of Events’ to ‘A View from the Top of the World.’ On October 25, 2023, Dream Theater announced Mangini’s departure and Portnoy’s return.
