Mike Portnoy Admits He Wanted To Have Dimebag Darrell And Tom Morello In His Supergroup, LTE

Dream Theater former drummer Mike Portnoy opened up about the line-up of his supergroup Liquid Tension Experiment during an interview with Revolver, and apparently, Portnoy had both former Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell and Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello in his mind for the band.

Liquid Tension Experiment is a metal supergroup that was founded by Mike Portnoyback in 1997. The band has released two studio albums, ‘Liquid Tension Experiment,’ which was released on March 10, 1998, and ‘Liquid Tension Experiment 2’ which was released on June 15, 1999. However, the band is planning to release its third studio album named ‘Liquid Tension Experiment 3’ on March 26, 2021.

The band consists of four members, Dream Theater founding member John Petrucci, keyboardist Jordan Rudess, bassist Tony Levin, and finally, Mike Portnoy. However, the line-up was going to be different when it comes to the guitarist if Portnoy managed to agree with his first choice, Dimebag Darrell, however, he was unable to join the band due to conflicting schedules.

During a recent interview, Mike Portnoy was asked about the other musicians he considered to reach out for the Liquid Tension Experiment, apparently, Portnoy revealed that in addition to having Dimebag Darrell on his list, he also wanted to work with Tom Morello along with a few other musicians.

Here is what Portnoy said:

“Well, the backstory is that I was given this outlet to put together some sort of solo thing, and I wanted to work with Jordan, who wasn’t in Dream Theater yet, and I wanted to work with Tony. I also wanted to keep it separate from Dream Theater. So Dimebag was on my list. So was Tom Morello and a few other guys. None of which ever worked out, because of the timing or whatever. And so then I asked John to be part of it, and I’m glad I did because it really cemented the LTE chemistry. And it ultimately brought Jordan into Dream Theater. But yeah, I mean, Dimebag would have brought this to a whole different place, no doubt. So that’s a crazy ‘what if’ kind of scenario to consider.”
