Former Megadeth bassist David Ellefson recently shared his perspective on Dave Mustaine’s departure from Metallica. He addressed whether the firing ultimately benefited the guitarist in a discussion on the David Ellefson Show.

Ellefson was asked directly about the long-standing question of whether Metallica’s decision to let Mustaine go was actually beneficial for the future Megadeth frontman.

When asked, “Looking back, do you think Metallica did Dave Mustaine a favor by kicking him out? Because my whole thing is I don’t think he would have fit in with Metallica with the direction they wound up going, at all,” Ellefson provided insight from his personal experience with Mustaine.

“Not at all, and there’s a reason. Look, things go the way they go, right?” Ellefson responded. “As much as it sucked to start over, I saw Dave become a vastly better guitar player pretty quickly after Metallica. I met him about six weeks after he got let go.”

Ellefson’s comments offer a unique perspective. He witnessed Mustaine’s musical development firsthand shortly after the Metallica departure that would eventually lead to the formation of Megadeth.

The circumstances surrounding Mustaine’s departure from Metallica have become legendary in metal history. This moment marked a pivotal turning point that would reshape both bands’ futures.

Loudwire reported that Dave Mustaine was fired from Metallica on April 11, 1983, due to his erratic and violent behavior fueled by alcohol. Despite the band’s own heavy drinking culture, his bandmates James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, and Cliff Burton found Mustaine’s aggression intolerable. This led to a sudden and unceremonious dismissal.

The firing itself was particularly harsh. Kerrang! detailed how Mustaine was woken that morning and told he was out. He was handed a one-way Greyhound bus ticket without any chance to discuss or defend himself. This abrupt end to his Metallica tenure left Mustaine devastated but ultimately motivated to prove his worth.

Following his dismissal, Mustaine channeled his frustration into founding Megadeth. The band quickly became a major force in thrash metal. Wikipedia noted that his departure allowed him to develop as a guitarist and bandleader on his own terms. This growth was something that Ellefson personally observed just weeks after Mustaine left Metallica.

This trajectory established Mustaine not just as a former Metallica member but as a defining figure in metal history in his own right. The firing, while painful at the time, became the catalyst for one of metal’s most successful and influential bands. This validates Ellefson’s observation about Mustaine’s rapid improvement as a musician following his departure from Metallica.
