The Greatest Heavy Metal Bands list has been released, and according to the fans, it’s quite controversial.
Forbes shared the 38-band list, and the list includes any band from Metallica to Napalm Death. The first five bands listed are Metallica, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Pantera, and Judas Priest, with the first being Metallica and the fifth being Judas Priest. The first five bands were followed by Ozzy Osbourne, Slipknot, Slayer, Tool, and Avenged Sevenfold in order.
Music journalist Mitch Lafon shared the first five bands of the list on his X account, and while some did like the list, some thought it was ridiculous. Most fans agreed that Metallica should be at the top of the list; however, they thought the rest of the list was ’embarrassingly bad.’
“Solid list, could argue the order based on criteria. Sabbath of course the ones that really started it, then Priest taking it more mainstream, Maiden being highly influential with no airplay and Metallica selling the most,” one user commented. “That list is so embarrassingly bad… Dream Theater is down near irrelevant C leaguers? We are pretending Anthrax and Megadeth should not be higher on that list. It is laughable,” another added.
And some didn’t want Pantera in the top 5. “Pantera before Priest is a travesty… I wouldn’t put Pantera near the top 5 myself,” one user said. Another added: “No way is Pantera above Judas Priest. I mean no hate by this at all, but I do not understand the hype.”
While the list included iconic bands such as Motörhead, Dio, and Death, it included names like Korn, Kyuss, Carcass, Converge and Type O Negative as well.
