Maynard James Keenan On Changing From Tool To A Puscifer Mindset

Puscifer and Tool’s iconic vocalist Maynard James Keenan recently spoke about his role in two bands. Being their lead singer at the same time, MJK stated that he has to approach them differently and change his perspective.

Tool was formed in 1990 by Adam Jones, who later had to convince Maynard James Keenan to assemble a band with him. 13 years after starting Tool, Keenan ventured off to a side project, Puscifer, which was a name for his solo work. The songs and the lyrics of Puscifer were different than Tool in its creative side.

The singer has been managing these two bands plus A Perfect Circle with Tool guitarist Billy Howerdel. With A Perfect Circle, he was involved in creating four studio albums while working with Tool and Puscifer. The singer recently spoke about how he manages to be active in these different bands and his techniques.

He started by saying that the bands are different, so he has to adapt to a different style. This style transformation changes the perspective and makes you perform bands’ songs differently. Maynard James Keenan also stated that he must compromise on things like not performing that much and working around each other as bandmates.

Here are MJK’s words regarding having multiple bands:

“Different set of people, different conversations. Put a different wig on, a different outfit, and it ends up just changing your perspective. They’re different songs, and you’re approaching them differently. You’re trying to cram three years of touring into one year, and you have to do it. So you figure it out.

Of course, all the bands have to compromise and figure out how to work around each other because that’s just it. Even if you want to do 60 shows, I’m sorry, you’re going to get 45. There’s going to be a compromise back and forth just because we’re trying to catch up.”

Maynard James Keenan is still active with his bands and is still performing. The musician has other interests than making music with his three groups. The singer is also a winemaker, and aside from the fast rock and roll career, he associates with a calmer lifestyle.
