Lindsey Buckingham Touches Upon Stevie Nicks’ Refusal To Work With Fleetwood Mac

Fleetwood Mac’s former lead guitarist and singer Lindsey Buckingham joined an interview with Classic Rock in which he revealed his opinions on why Stevie Nicks refused to work with the band members to work on new songs.
With Buckingham and Nicks, Fleetwood Mac achieved considerable commercial success. However, during the recordings of ‘Rumours,’ each member of the band went through a breakup. After Nicks and Buckingham left the band, they were replaced by several other guitarists and vocalists.
In 1993, the lineup including Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Nicks, and Buckingham came back together for the first time. Four years later, a full reunion occurred. After Christine McVie left Fleetwood Mac, it became a four-member band. In 2003, they released their most recent album ‘Say You Will.’
McVie rejoined Fleetwood Mac in 2014. In 2018, Buckingham was fired and replaced by Mike Campbell. Since 2003’s ‘Say You Will,’ the band didn’t release any new material. Speaking about this lack of new music with Classic Rock, Lindsey Buckingham revealed the reason for it.
According to Buckingham, Stevie Nick’s refusal to get involved with Fleetwood Mack for new material is the reason the band didn’t release a new album in 18 years. He stated that they actually began working on a new album back in 2012. Buckingham then said Nick refused to participate for some reason.
Following that, the musician said Nicks got disoriented in her ‘wanting to pursue Stevie Nicks in capital letters.’ He then claimed that Nicks lost track of her writing and felt there is nothing left she could offer for new material. So, she didn’t want to be a part of the record, according to Buckingham.
Lindsey Buckingham told Classic Rock that:
“I had a bunch of songs, and Mick Fleetwood and John McVie and I went in with the producer Mitchell Froom and cut a bunch of stuff. This was before Christine McVie returned to the band in 2014. We very much wanted to draw Stevie in, and for some reason, she refused to participate.
[Nicks] has sort of gotten a little bit disoriented in her wanting to pursue Stevie Nicks in capital letters, if you will. I think she kind of lost track of her writing a little bit and maybe didn’t think she had anything she felt she could offer, and so did not want to be a part of it.”
Buckingham also stated in the interview that the band tried to engage Nicks when Christine McVie returned. As the musician said, McVie had lots of song ideas, and they went to the studio to work on them. However, Nicks didn’t want to join them to make those musical efforts a Fleetwood Mac album, and they released 2017’s ‘Lindsey Buckingham Christine McVie’ album instead.
