The singer expressed optimism about his recovery timeline. He drew from previous experience with the condition.

“As I have had experience with Strep Throat before, I believe that with the medicine prescribed by the doctor and my own knowledge, I can be back singing before the estimated day,” he continued.

King Diamond revealed his intention to return to performing sooner than medically recommended.

“By cutting my recuperation from suggested 14 days to 6, which I feel might work in this case, we could be back performing this Thursday, July 10 in Athens, Greece,” he said. “Send me a Devil’s prayer or two and I shall do my utmost for this to happen.”

The Athens show represents the earliest possible return date for the vocalist’s planned performances.

This latest health setback adds to a series of challenges the Danish metal icon has faced throughout his career. These challenges particularly affect his vocal abilities and overall health.

AXS TV reported that King Diamond and his band had to cancel four shows across Hungary, Austria, Romania, and Bulgaria due to this diagnosis. The band had been on a European spring/summer tour that started on June 4 at Sweden Rock Festival. The tour featured a strong lineup including King Diamond on lead vocals, Andy La Rocque and Mike Wead on guitars, Pontus Egberg on bass, and Matt Thompson on drums, as well as Greek vocalist Hel Pyre on backing vocals.

King Diamond’s real name is Kim Bendix Petersen. He is renowned for his powerful and wide-ranging countertenor voice, including far-reaching falsetto screams. He uses this voice to great effect in both his solo work and with Mercyful Fate. Wikipedia noted that his distinctive vocal style has inspired numerous artists such as Metallica, Slayer, and Cradle of Filth throughout his decades-long career.

The vocalist has had to adapt his approach to singing following serious health challenges in recent years. Metal Injection documented that King Diamond underwent triple-bypass heart surgery in 2010 after suffering multiple heart attacks. This significantly impacted his vocal technique and performance capabilities.

Despite these health setbacks, King Diamond has continued to maintain his status as one of metal’s most distinctive vocalists. He has demonstrated remarkable resilience in adapting his legendary voice to overcome physical limitations while preserving the theatrical intensity that has defined his career for over four decades.
