King Diamond has announced a major lineup change. Longtime guitarist Andy La Rocque is departing the band, and ex-Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Gus G is joining as his replacement.
The band addressed La Rocque’s departure with a message reflecting on their long history together.
“After 40 years King Diamond the band and Andy La Rocque have mutually decided to part ways. Looking back, we do so with nothing but pride, gratitude, and respect for everything we have achieved together,” the announcement read. “All the countless memories we have created along the way are forever. Our friendship and respect for each other will always remain the same, and we all sincerely wish each other the absolute best for the future!”
Following the farewell message, King Diamond turned to the news of Gus G’s addition to the lineup.
“King Diamond here. It’s a Big Honor for me to Welcome Gus G. as our new guitarist, who will compose with us, record with us and tour with us in the future,” he wrote. “Gus will still continue with all his current projects, FIREWIND, Solo Project etc. No restrictions, just careful planning. We are already working with Gus and I simply can’t wait for you to hear all the new King Diamond music with him playing guitar on it!!!”
Gus G is known for his work with Ozzy Osbourne and his own band Firewind. He will maintain his existing commitments alongside his new role with King Diamond. New music featuring the updated lineup is already in progress.

King Diamond was formed in 1985 as a Danish heavy metal act, with Andy La Rocque among its founding members. His presence in the band was a defining constant across four decades of albums, tours, and lineup shifts. His exit stands as one of the most significant changes in the band’s history. La Rocque’s contributions helped shape the band’s signature sound — a blend of theatrical storytelling and technically precise guitar work that set King Diamond apart in the genre.
Gus G brings a similarly high-profile résumé to his new role. Best known internationally for his tenure as Ozzy Osbourne’s guitarist, he also leads Firewind, the Greek power metal band he founded. His ability to balance multiple major projects simultaneously made him a natural fit for King Diamond’s arrangement, which places no restrictions on his outside commitments.
The transition also comes at a time when former King Diamond members have been reconnecting in other contexts. Drummer Mikkey Dee recently reunited with La Rocque, Pete Blakk, and Hal Patino — all former King Diamond collaborators — for a side project called Lex Legion. The reunion underscores the enduring bonds formed during the band’s classic era.
With Gus G already deep in the creative process alongside King Diamond, the band appears focused on moving forward.
