Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess shared his thoughts about Mike Portnoy’s influence in a recent interview with Ibagenscast Youtube channel.

“Mike Portnoy started this band,” Rudess stated. “He was also probably one of the main reasons that I’m even in it.”

“I think you let the clouds move and the weather changes and things happen. It’s finally like, ‘Okay, well, this is a great time for him to return to the band,'” he continued. “It just made sense for everybody, the timing of that, and something that we all wanted to see happen.”

“It took some changes in different relationships and situations to allow it to happen. Finally, it did,” Rudess concluded.

The statement highlights the enduring connection between Rudess and Portnoy throughout their decades of musical collaboration and friendship.

Their musical partnership began before Rudess joined Dream Theater officially. Reports from Dream Theater Club show their first collaboration through the Liquid Tension Experiment. This side project allowed them to test their musical chemistry before Rudess’s recruitment to Dream Theater.

Insights from Blabbermouth reveal Portnoy’s crucial role as a founding member. He was instrumental in bringing Rudess into the band in 1999 to replace keyboardist Derek Sherinian.

A recent analysis by Blabbermouth highlights the positive impact of the reunion. Rudess emphasized that Portnoy’s return has brought fresh excitement to their creative process. The reunion has created a seamless integration and reinvigorated the band’s songwriting.

This homecoming represents a pivotal moment for Dream Theater. It reunites two musicians whose collaborative journey has shaped the band’s progressive metal legacy.
