Savatage bassist Johnny Lee Middleton recently opened up about the band’s plans for a new studio album and the musical direction of the upcoming material.
Middleton spoke candidly about the volume of music the band has been sitting on. He described a careful approach to deciding what to release and when.
“Oh, yeah. We have a whole bunch of stuff that we’re sitting on right now,” Middleton said. “Jon has a whole pile of music. Shoot, I’ve had stuff for a couple of years now. And we have some really strong stuff, and it’s just a matter of when we wanna put it out and when the timing’s right.”
He went on to emphasize the business side of releasing music and the importance of making strategic decisions with their catalog.
“‘Cause after all, it’s a business, and you have to make smart decisions with what you do with your music ’cause it’s limited,” he continued. “What we have is limited. And we have a whole lot of songs. So it’s a matter of picking the right songs for the right time.”
Middleton also described the musical range of the new material. He noted that it draws from across Savatage’s entire discography.
“It’s kind of a mix of everything, really,” he said. “There’s some real heavy stuff on it. There’s some stuff like ‘Edge Of Thorns’-y kind of stuff on there. ‘Cause half the stuff Zak’s [Stevens, current Savatage touring vocalist] gonna sing, half the stuff Jon’s gonna sing.”
“So you have a total blend of everything Savatage has done, basically, thrown into a big pile,” Middleton added. “So there’s some real heavy shit on there. Jon’s got some real heavy stuff, and then he’s got some stuff that’s not so heavy. So it’s kind of a… If you took all the albums and put them in a blender and mixed them up, that’s basically what you’re gonna get.”
Middleton’s comments come at a busy period for the band. Savatage has been balancing archival releases, a major European tour, and the ongoing development of their first new studio album in over two decades.
Jon Oliva has confirmed that the new studio album is currently on hold, though a shortage of material is not the reason. “Now, as for the new album, at this time it’s on hold for a few reasons. Shortage of material is not one of them. There is actually a lot of new music that I have been working on,” Oliva stated. The album had been working under the tentative title Curtain Call. Studio sessions were originally expected to begin in January 2026, though those plans have since shifted.
While the studio album awaits its moment, Savatage has kept momentum with archival activity. The band released Madness Reigns From The Gutter (1990), a previously unreleased live recording captured during their iconic “Rulin’ Gutter” tour. The tour followed their landmark Gutter Ballet album. The record was restored from original recordings and remastered. It was released via earMUSIC on June 26, 2026 in Europe, with a US physical release to follow on September 18, 2026.
Alongside the live release, Savatage embarked on their “Prelude To Madness” European tour for summer 2026. The tour featured nine headline performances and multiple festival appearances, including slots at Sweden Rock Festival and Wacken Open Air. It marked a significant return to the stage for the band after a long absence from live performances.
The combination of live releases, festival appearances, and a stockpile of new studio material paints a picture of a band carefully managing its comeback. Both Oliva and Middleton have confirmed the depth of the unreleased catalog. The new album, whenever it arrives, appears to be a question of timing rather than readiness.
No official release date for the new Savatage album has been announced at this time.
