John Illsley recently sat down with Vulture for an interview, where he expressed his relief that Dire Straits decided to disband when they did, hinting at a potential clash with frontman Mark Knopfler that was thankfully avoided.
The bassist’s words reflected the band’s internal dynamics following their final tour for the album ‘On Every Street.’ He said:
“After we toured, the decision was made to put Dire Straits to bed. It was the best thing to do. We couldn’t keep going like that. We couldn’t play to any more people. Seven million people came to the ‘On Every Street’ tour. We were tired physically and mentally.”
The Strain Of Success

The musician further explained their mindset at the time:
“We were prone to arguments. I wanted to go and be a painter. Mark wanted to go off and examine all sorts of other things. We’re still great friends, but if we hadn’t packed it in then, all I’ll say is it would likely be a very different relationship now.”
Reflections On Dire Straits’ Legacy

In a conversation with the Telegraph in November 2023, Illsley again spoke about the reasons behind the band’s breakup in 1995. He described a shared sense of fatigue and dissatisfaction among the members, exacerbated by the toll their careers had taken on their personal lives. He recalled:
“I sort of knew that things were coming to an end. And I was pretty happy about that because we were exhausted. We were exhausted. Mentally, physically, emotionally exhausted. Most of our marriages were falling apart; we weren’t seeing our children very much – it was all wrong, basically. It’s the usual things that can happen to people in bands.”
Closing A Chapter And Opening New Doors

The bassist also touched upon the ongoing speculation and offers to reunite the band, revealing conversations with their former manager about the financial incentives to reform. Despite these propositions, Illsley remained convinced that ending Dire Straits was the right decision, emphasizing the fulfillment he found in pursuing painting and stepping away from music for a time.
Dire Straits’ decision to disband after their ‘On Every Street’ tour, which spanned 14 months, included 216 shows across multiple continents, and attracted 7.1 million attendees, marked the end of an era for the band and the beginning of new chapters for its members.
