The Red Hot Chili Peppers, who are currently on their most extensive tour ever, sat down with 60 Minutes to talk about how they connect with each other while performing on stage. John Frusciante believes that the bass is the lead instrument on every track, and he’s there to support Flea.
Things have not always been smooth sailing for the band regarding their ability to support each other on stage. Frusciante left in 2009, seemingly never to return. However, once he came back in 2019, it was like nothing had changed, and they got back into the groove of things.
Their new understanding of one another translated into their music and on-stage performances. Flea resembled the connection between his bandmates to the basketball players playing telepathically. On the other hand, Frusciante explained Flea’s role in the band by implying that the bass was the lead instrument in their sound.
Flea said:
“The way jazz players play and the way that basketball players play telepathically and understanding when to go and when to move and when to do what.”
While John Frusciante’s added:
“We’re all supporting each other at the same time; everybody has different ways of doing that. I see the bass as the lead instrument the whole time. I see each song as being like a bass solo where I’m there to support it, you know.”
Their fruitful relationship gave them two very successful albums ‘Unlimited Love’ and ‘Return of the Dream Canteen’ last year. This shows that once everyone in the band got on the same page and understood what each needed, the performances were better than ever, and John Frusciante seeing the bass as the lead instrument paid off.
