Tenacious D is back with new music after they went on hiatus in 2024.
Jack Black and Kyle Gass will be on a charity album for L.A. wildfire victims, as reported by Metal Hammer. They covered REO Speedwagon’s ‘Keep On Loving You.’
The album, ‘Good Music To Lift Los Angeles,’ will also have songs from Death Cab For Cutie, R.E.M., Chelsea Wolfe, and more. It will be on Good Music’s Bandcamp for 24 hours starting February 7 at 12:01 AM PT. All proceeds will go to charity.
This is Tenacious D’s second cover in a year, following ‘…Baby One More Time’ for ‘Kung Fu Panda 4.’ They also released ‘Video Games’ in 2023 and were planning a new album, but all plans were canceled in July.
The cancellation happened after Gass joked onstage about an assassination attempt on Donald Trump. The incident occurred at the band’s show in Sydney, Australia, when Gass made a birthday wish on stage, saying, “Don’t miss Trump next time.” An Australian senator called for their deportation, and Black later said he was ‘blindsided.’ Gass apologized, but the band went on break.
“I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday,” Black stated at the time. “I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form. After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.”
In August, Black confirmed they would return but needed time off. He told Variety, “We need to take a break. Everybody needs a break sometime. And we’ll be back.”
It’s unclear when they recorded their new cover, but they have played it live before. Another charity album, ‘Los Angeles Rising,’ featuring Nick Cave and PJ Harvey, is also out this week.
