Body Count released a new rendition of Pink Floyd’s ‘Comfortably Numb’ in September, with re-written lyrics and a feature from David Gilmour. The band also performed the 1980 classic from ‘The Wall’ album on ‘The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon’ this week.
During the show, vocalist Ice-T explained how he managed to get both Gilmour and Roger Waters to approve the cover, despite their long-standing feud.
The singer picked the Pink Floyd original among a bunch of old songs he was searching to sample or rap over thanks to Waters’ bass part. “We lay it out and then I just don’t think about the politics. So, they go, ‘Okay, you gotta send this to Pink Floyd to get it approved,’ and everybody’s like, ‘That’s not gonna happen,’” he recalled.
Ice-T first received no as an answer and almost dropped the project. But his manager reached out to Gilmour, who said he liked the new lyrics, which referred to concerns in the modern world. “He said, ‘I totally approve it,’” the Body Count frontman added.
Next came Waters, who gave his approval after hearing the cover and finding out Ice-T was the one singing. “So, now you’ve got two people on opposites sides that approved the song, which made me feel really good, ’cause that means that the song is honest and real,” the rapper concluded.
Body Count’s version of ‘Comfortably Numb’ arrived as part of their latest album, ‘Merciless,’ which came out on November 22.
