In a recent interview with TotalRock, Sex Pistols’ former bassist Glen Matlock discussed his thoughts on the ‘Pistol’ series. He commented on the source material of the show, specifically mentioning Steve Jones and Johnny Rotten.

The past year witnessed the release of a miniseries focused on the rise and success of Sex Pistols. This show, named ‘Pistol,’ was derived from the memoir of Jones, ‘Lonely Boy: Tales From A Sex Pistol.’ Directed by Danny Boyle, the series drew criticism from Matlock for the way it represented certain aspects of the band’s history.

The musician, however, showed agreement with the choice of the guitarist’s memoir as the basis for the series. He suggested that it might not have gotten as many eyeballs had the series been adapted from the version of events described by John Lydon.

The bassist’s views read:

“I have a few meetings with Danny (Boyle). I was sure that it was going to be a long listening. It wasn’t anything we didn’t agree. So, Danny now knows that I think he’s a ‘See terms.’ I thought it was important it would be made because it was based on Steve’s book. Steve formed the band, you know. I think if John (Lydon) would have made the movie, nobody would be looking.”

From the get-go to today, Matlock’s thoughts have remained the same. Despite his disapproval of certain elements of the adaptation, he has consistently acknowledged the significance of Jones’ perspective on the band’s history.
