Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider shared an emotional exchange with The Wildhearts’ Ginger Wildheart, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer and has refused treatment.
The exchange began with Snider offering words of support to Wildheart. He reflected on the difficulty of the world and the impact Wildheart has had on those around him.
“Brother Ginger, the world can be really disheartening,” Snider said. “You will be missed.”
Wildheart responded by sharing his own perspective on facing the end of his life. He expressed a belief that he is being spared further hardship out of a higher sense of care.
“I genuinely believe I’m being pulled out of this ridiculous game early,” Wildheart said. “I believe in a love that would do that for its most deserving.”
Snider replied with a brief message acknowledging the loss that Wildheart’s passing will bring.
“We will be less without you,” Snider said.
The exchange between the two rock veterans comes against the backdrop of a diagnosis Wildheart revealed earlier this year. That diagnosis has shaped how he has chosen to spend his remaining time.
Wildheart disclosed in March that he had been diagnosed with Mantle Cell Lymphoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. He was given a prognosis of roughly two to three years to live. The news sent shockwaves through the rock community given his decades-long career as a fixture of the British hard rock scene.
Wildheart decided to forgo chemoimmunotherapy and treatment altogether. He chose instead to spend his final years on his own terms.
“I won’t go through treatment,” Wildheart said at the time. “I’ve lived the life of ten men and will die with dignity.”
Wildheart founded The Wildhearts in 1989 after being fired from the Quireboys. He went on to build the band into one of the most volatile and beloved acts in British rock, known for blending punk aggression with melodic hard rock hooks. In the months following his diagnosis, he has continued making music and performing. He told fans in June that he is “living every second in the moment” as he embraces the time he has left.
The interaction with Snider reflects the outpouring of support Wildheart has received from fellow musicians since going public with his condition. Fans and peers alike continue to grapple with the prospect of losing one of rock’s most enduring voices. Further updates may follow.
