Gene Simmons recently addressed backlash from KISS fans following his comments about late guitarist Ace Frehley. He shared a new message on X (formerly Twitter).
Two days prior, Simmons had made remarks about Frehley’s lifestyle and death. He stated that the guitarist had refused advice from those who cared about him.
Simmons said in his previous interview, “Ace refused [advice] from people that cared about him — including yours truly — to try to change his lifestyle. In and out of bad decisions. Falling down the stairs — I’m not a doctor — doesn’t kill you. There may have been other issues, and it breaks my heart.”
Now, in an attempt to ease tensions, Simmons posted a brief tribute. “Ace FOREVER,” Simmons wrote in his new X post.
However, the post has not fully satisfied KISS fans. They expressed frustration over what they perceived as insufficient accountability. One fan commented directly on the post, saying, “Just apologize. Bashing a guy after he died right before such a national honor. Ace’s daughter was hurting. Low blow.”
Another fan echoed similar sentiments and called for a more direct acknowledgment of the misstep. “Really, Gene? Why don’t you just say ‘Yeah, I messed up. I should’ve kept my mouth shut cause I don’t know what was going on with Ace,’ and leave it at that,” they wrote.
The criticism reflects broader frustration among fans. One commenter stated bluntly: “Too late. Nobody believes you’re a good person. You’ve proved them right too many times.”
The tension between Simmons and KISS fans stems from the tragic circumstances surrounding Frehley’s death. Ace Frehley died in October 2025 after complications from a fall at his home, as documented on Wikipedia. The guitarist initially fell on September 25, 2025, which forced him to cancel tour dates. A more serious incident followed just days later.
On October 2, 2025, Frehley suffered a severe fall down a flight of stairs that resulted in brain bleeding. He was placed on life support following the accident. According to Wikipedia, he died several hours after life support was removed on October 16, 2025. The circumstances of his death were particularly sensitive given that Frehley’s family was grieving the loss.
Simmons’ earlier comments appeared to speculate about the causes of Frehley’s death. He suggested that lifestyle issues may have contributed. “He refused [advice] from people that cared about him — including yours truly — to try to change his lifestyle. In and out of bad decisions. Falling down the stairs — I’m not a doctor — doesn’t kill you. There may have been other issues, and it breaks my heart,” Simmons had stated.
These remarks drew immediate criticism from fans. They felt Simmons was being insensitive during a time of mourning. Many viewed the comments as inappropriate given that Frehley’s daughter was grieving her father’s loss. The backlash intensified because Simmons’ speculation seemed to shift blame toward Frehley’s personal choices rather than acknowledging the tragic accident itself.
In response to the mounting criticism, Simmons and Paul Stanley released a joint statement. They described Ace Frehley as an “essential and irreplaceable rock soldier during some of the most formative foundational chapters of the band and its history,” per Wikipedia. This tribute highlighted Simmons’ recognition of Frehley’s significant role and influence in KISS. However, many fans felt it came too late and lacked the direct apology they were seeking.
The exchange underscores the enduring emotional connection fans have to KISS’s legacy and the members who shaped the band’s iconic history. For many, Frehley’s contributions to rock music remain irreplaceable. The manner in which his death was discussed became a point of contention that continues to resonate within the fanbase.
