Former Turnstile guitarist Brady Ebert has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and first-degree assault after allegedly using his vehicle to strike the father of the band’s frontman, Brendan Yates. Rolling Stone reported the charges.

The band issued a statement addressing the serious charges against their former member, who left the group in 2022.

Rolling Stone reported that Brady Ebert, a cofounding Turnstile member who split from the hardcore group in 2022, is facing charges of second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault, both felonies, in Maryland’s Montgomery District Court. The band told Rolling Stone that Ebert, 33, had allegedly ‘used his vehicle to run over Brendan’s father [William Yates], causing severe physical trauma.’ The band, which asked for privacy during this time, says Yates survived and ‘has successfully undergone surgery, and we’re hoping for the best possible outcome in his recovery.’

Turnstile provided additional context about their previous relationship with Ebert and the circumstances leading to this incident.

The band stated that Turnstile cut ties with Brady Ebert in 2022 in response to a consistent pattern of harmful behavior affecting himself, the band, and the community. They explained that after exhausting every available resource to support his access to help and recovery, a boundary ultimately had to be set when healthy communication was no longer possible and he began threatening violence.

The band continued their statement, describing escalating concerns over Ebert’s behavior in recent years.

They said that in the years since, his baseless tirades have continued in public. “We never addressed it. We chose to protect his privacy and the circumstances around his departure, even when he did nothing to be deserving of that protection. Over the past few months, his threats only escalated further,” they said. “We have no language left for Brady.”

The Montgomery County Police Department provided additional details about the incident in their official press release. They noted that the victim was Ebert’s 78-year-old neighbor and sustained serious injuries including a broken leg. The investigation remains ongoing.

The arrest marks a dramatic escalation in what has been an increasingly volatile situation since Ebert’s departure from the Baltimore hardcore band he helped establish.

Stereogum revealed that Ebert and Yates grew up together in suburban Maryland and co-founded Turnstile in Baltimore in 2010. The band went on to achieve significant success, performing on three studio albums before their rise to mainstream recognition, including their critically acclaimed 2021 album Glow On and subsequent Grammy wins in 2026 for metal performance and rock album categories.

The incident occurred on April 1, 2026, when the Los Angeles Times reported that Ebert was arrested in Silver Spring, Maryland, for allegedly intentionally striking 79-year-old William Yates with his car outside the Yates family home. The attack was reportedly captured on surveillance video and resulted in severe physical trauma to the victim.

Following his departure from Turnstile, Ebert’s behavior continued to cause concern within the music community. Metal Injection documented that Ebert joined another band called The S.E.T., but was subsequently removed from that group as well after making inflammatory online comments about Turnstile, including allegations of fund mishandling. He then launched a new musical project called Experience.

The Independent confirmed that Ebert remains in custody following his arrest, with a bail hearing scheduled for April 2. His attorney has declined to comment on the charges. The case represents a tragic turn for what was once a close friendship and creative partnership that helped launch one of hardcore music’s most successful contemporary acts.
