Brent Hinds, the co-founder and former guitarist of the Grammy-winning metal band Mastodon, has died at the age of 51 following a motorcycle accident in Atlanta.
The crash occurred on the night of August 20, 2025. According to local police, Hinds’ motorcycle collided with a BMW SUV that failed to yield the right of way. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office officially confirmed his death. Authorities stated that the accident remains under investigation.
Mastodon issued a statement on social media, saying: “We are devastated to announce the passing of our brother Brent. Our hearts are broken. We ask for privacy as we mourn this tremendous loss.”
Hinds co-founded Mastodon in 2000 and quickly became recognized for his distinctive guitar style and raw stage presence, helping shape the band into one of the most influential acts in modern metal.
Although he announced his departure from Mastodon in 2022, Hinds remained an iconic figure within the community and continued exploring new musical projects. Fans continued to view him as an irreplaceable part of the band’s legacy.
