Elon Musk recently posted a tweet on X and teased Green Day regarding Billie Joe Armstrong’s MAGA lyrics.
During a New Year’s Eve show, Armstrong changed the words of Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ to criticize the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement. This happened live on the ‘Dick Clark New Year’s Rockin’ Eve’ TV broadcast. Upon seeing this news, Musk wrote:
“Green Day goes from raging against the machine to milquetoastedly raging for it.”
Then, a user on the platform left a comment under the CEO’s post, writing:
“Milquetoast. Noun. Milque·toast, ˈmilk-ˌtōst. Synonyms of milquetoast: a timid, meek, or unassertive person. You’ll learn stuff here on X.”
Altering ‘American Idiot’ Lyrics Live

As he performed, Armstrong delivered the lyrics, replacing the original line where he declared he wasn’t aligned with the ‘redneck agenda’:
“I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda.”
This immediately grabbed the attention of the audience and people watching at home, causing lots of reactions online. Some people liked the change in lyrics, seeing it as a sharp criticism of MAGA and former President Donald Trump, but others thought it was rude to MAGA supporters.
Green Day’s History Of Political Statements

Green Day has always been vocal about Trump. This summer, they made T-shirts with the word ‘nimrod’ over Trump’s picture to sell for wildfire relief in Maui. Also, during their 2017 tour, Armstrong often yelled, ‘Forget you, Trump!’ before starting the song ‘American Idiot.’
He also sang ‘No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA’ during the American Music Awards while performing ‘Bang Bang.’ Actually, the New Year’s Eve show wasn’t the first time Armstrong replaced ‘redneck agenda’ with ‘MAGA agenda.’ He did the same at a 2019 show at the iHeartRadio Music Festival. Speaking to Kerrang! in 2020, the frontman said the following about Trump:
“I think that he’s the most divisive leader of a country since Adolf Hitler. It sounds melodramatic to say it, but living in America, it’s just true.”
In other news, Green Day’s new album, ‘Saviors,’ comes out on January 19, 2024. The band says the album will cover many topics, including politics. Some released songs from it are ‘The American Dream Is Killing Me,’ ‘Look Ma, No Brains!,’ and ‘Dilemma.’
