Ed Sheeran Shares Why Shawn Mendes Refused His Offer To Sign Him

Ed Sheeran made an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, during which he revealed why Shawn Mendes refused his offer to sign him to his label.

Shawn Mendes is an aspiring singer-songwriter who started to become known in 2013 after sharing his song covers on Vine. The following year, artist manager Andrew Gertler and Island Records A&R Ziggy Chareton noticed his talents, and Mendes signed a deal with their record label.

In 2014, Shawn released his self-titled debut EP and then his debut studio album ‘Handwritten’ the following year. He quickly climbed up the ladder of fame with his chart-topping releases. However, although he claims Ed Sheeran was one of his influences, it seems like Mendes refused Sheeran’s offer to sign him.

In the interview on The Howard Stern Show, Ed Sheeran revealed that he tried to sign Shawn Mendes to his label. He then said he didn’t insist on his offer because Mendes was already following a path with his record label. According to Sheeran, Shawn was already comfortable with his label as he knew them.

Ed Sheeran told The Howard Stern Show that:

He was already down the road with the record label that he’d signed to. He knew the guys, he was comfortable with them. And I’m not going to use the card of like ‘Hey, I’m this actor, blah blah blah,’ because what if I can’t do a better job than them? I want him to have a career. I don’t want him to have a career if it’s under me.”
