Mike Portnoy recently shared his emotional reaction to Dream Theater’s performance of Pink Floyd’s “Echoes” at the historic Pompeii venue. He expressed his gratitude in a heartfelt message posted on Instagram.
The drummer reflected on what he described as a surreal and career-defining experience performing at the legendary location.
“Dream Theater – Echoes (Live At Pompeii) Did this really happen? Am I Dreaming? Mind still blown over the privilege of being able to do this in my lifetime,” Portnoy said.
He continued to express his amazement at the opportunity and the significance of the venue for his career.
“Well, that was a night I’ll always cherish forever: Dream Theater Live At Pompeii!! That’s a sentence I never imagined I’d ever write! As I posted yesterday, this was a bucket list venue for me…and to have performed Pink Floyd’s entire 25 Minute Echoes was the cherry on top!” he said.
Portnoy concluded his message by acknowledging his gratitude for reaching new milestones in his career. He thanked the audience who shared the experience.
“Truly a night to remember…and I have so much gratitude to still be reaching these kind of unachieved benchmarks at this stage in my career! Thank you all in attendance for sharing this magical evening with us…” he added.
The performance holds deeper significance when considering the historical context and Portnoy’s personal journey with both the venue and the band.
Blabbermouth reported that Portnoy had worshipped the film Pink Floyd: Live At Pompeii throughout his teenage years in the 1980s. He watched it on VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, Blu-ray, and recently the newly restored and remixed edition. This made the opportunity to perform on the same hallowed ground a lifelong dream fulfilled for the drummer.
The concert marked a particularly meaningful moment as it combined Portnoy’s return to Dream Theater after a 13-year absence with a performance at one of rock music’s most iconic venues. Metal Injection noted that the performance was held at the very site where Pink Floyd performed the original 1971 version over 50 years ago.
Dream Theater’s 25-minute rendition of “Echoes” was a surprise inclusion in the setlist that resonated deeply with both fans and band members alike. Metal Addicts revealed that the cover was met with emotional reverence. This made the concert a once-in-a-lifetime event that bridged generations of progressive rock history.
The performance represents more than just a musical tribute. It serves as a testament to the enduring influence of Pink Floyd’s groundbreaking work and the cyclical nature of rock history, where new generations of musicians pay homage to their influences at the very locations that inspired them decades earlier.
