Depeche Mode’s Founding Member Andy Fletcher Dies At 60

Depeche Mode recently posted a tweet to announce the untimely death of their keyboardist and founding member Andy Fletcher.

In 1980, Andy Fletcher, Martin Gore, and his schoolmate Vince Clarke formed a band named Composition Of Sound. After recruiting Dave Gahan, they adopted the name Depeche Mode. However, Clarke left the group in 1981 after releasing their debut album titled ‘Speak & Spell.’

When Clarke left, Depeche Mode continued as a trio. They then remained active in the music scene up until the release of their fourteenth album ‘Spirit’ and the promoting world tour. Throughout his career in Depeche Mode, Fletcher handled several duties and contributed significantly to the band’s success.

Fletcher’s role in Depeche Mode evolved throughout the years. He played electric and synth bass and later handled many of the band’s financial and legal interests. Moreover, Fletcher contributed synthesizer parts and was also the band’s spokesperson. However, he didn’t contribute to the songwriting or vocals.

Known as the one who brought the band together, Andy Fletcher recently passed away from natural causes at 60. Depeche Mode announced this sad news in a tweet, describing Fletcher’s passing as untimely. They then expressed their shock and sadness over Fletcher’s death and asked fans to respect his family’s privacy.

The band’s tweet read:

“We are shocked and filled with overwhelming sadness with the untimely passing of our dear friend, family member, and bandmate Andy ‘Fletch’ Fletcher. Fletch had a true heart of gold and was always there when you needed support, a lively conversation, a good laugh, or a cold pint. Our hearts are with his family, and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts and respect their privacy in this difficult time.”

After hearing the sad news, The Smashing Pumpkins also tweeted to express their condolences. In the tweet, they regarded Andy Fletcher as an inspirational artist and said their thoughts are with the musician’s family, friends, and fans.

Smashing Pumpkins’ tweet is as follows:

“SP is saddened to learn about the passing of the legendary and inspirational Andrew Fletcher of Depeche Mode. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and fans at this difficult time.”
