Deep Purple’s Ian Paice Recalls His Encounter With Jimi Hendrix The Night Before He Died

Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice recently joined an interview with Hangin’ & Bangin’ hosted by Carmine Appice, Vinny Appice, and Ron Onesti. The drummer remembered his brief encounter with Jimi Hendrix in the bathroom.

Besides being among the greatest drummers, Ian Paice is also the last remaining original member of Deep Purple. As you probably know, Deep Purple is famous for its frequent lineup changes, but Paice managed to stay in the band since its formation. When the band broke up for eight years between 1976 and 1984, Ian Paice remained active, playing Paice Ashton Lord, Whitesnake, and the Gary Moore Band.

Besides his tenure in Deep Purple, Paice has also collaborated with many artists like Jeff Beck, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, David Gilmour, Brian May, and Alice Cooper throughout his long career. Deep Purple released their twenty-second studio album, ‘Turning to Crime,’ on November 26, 2021. The band will be heading to Europe in May 2022 for their ‘The Long Goodbye’ tour, which was delayed due to the pandemic.

During the conversation, Ian Paice was asked whether the story of his interaction with Jimi Hendrix in the bathroom was true. The drummer confirmed the story and revealed they had a brief encounter with Hendrix the night before he died. They were at the same nightclub, and they went to the bathroom at the same time. Then, they greeted each other and had a brief chat there. That was the whole story, as stated by Paice.

His brief encounter with Jimi Hendrix in Ian Paice’s words:

“The night before he died in London, we were both in the same nightclub. Carmine played there too before. That’s where I first saw you play live. We would just happen to go to take a leak at the same time together. It was like, ‘Jimi, how are you?’ and ‘Fine, how are you?’ That was it, and he was in really good form. That’s all it was. Two rockers that met in the night and then crossed swords.”
