Dee Snider recently took to X to weigh in on Disney+’s ‘The Marvels,’ suggesting that gender doesn’t predetermine the quality of superhero movies.

The musician turned his attention to the cinematic world with a critical view of ‘The Marvels,’ writing:

“Just finished watching Disney+’s ‘The Marvels.’ Proof positive that a movie written, directed, and starring women can suck just as much as a movie written, directed, and starring men!”

Audience Reactions Vary

Responses to Snider’s critique were mixed, with some social media users agreeing with his sentiment while others defended the movie. One comment highlighted the personal enjoyment a viewer found in ‘The Marvels,’ saying:

“I enjoyed it. It’s not ‘Iron Man’ or ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ but I still laughed and had a good time.”

Another simply agreed with the singer’s words, writing:

“Truth.”

A third lamented the overall quality of comic book movies, stating:

“Comic movies suck, doesn’t matter who made them. They just suck.”

A Cinematic Milestone With Challenges

‘The Marvels,’ a sequel to ‘Captain Marvel’ and a continuation of the ‘Ms. Marvel’ miniseries, is notable for several reasons beyond its box office performance. Directed by Nia DaCosta, who co-wrote the screenplay with Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik, it features a predominantly female lead cast, including Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani.

DaCosta’s role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) breaks new ground as she becomes the franchise’s youngest director and the first Black woman to helm one of its movies. Despite the groundbreaking nature of its production team and the anticipation surrounding the film, ‘The Marvels’ struggled at the box office.

The film grossed $206 million worldwide against a gross production budget of $274.8 million. This made it the lowest-grossing film in the MCU to date and one of the few not to break even during its theatrical run.
