David Lee Roth’s Jack Nicholson-Related Condition To Start An Acting Career
Many rock icons have wanted to pursue an acting career and aimed to shine on both the big and small screen. For instance, the charismatic frontman Jon Bon Jovi is also a credited actor in the films such as ‘Moonlight And Valentino,’ ‘Homegrown,’ and ‘New Year’s Eve.’ Sting, on the other hand, appeared in Pete Townshend’s 1979 film ‘Quadrophenia’ as a hotel bellboy.
David Lee Roth is a jack of all trades; he is a prolific musician, visual artist, state-licensed emergency medical technician, and martial artist. As it turns out, the singer also wanted to get into the film business as a director. Undoubtedly, seeing Diamond Dave shine as an actor wouldn’t surprise anyone. In a 2002 interview with the A.V. Club, Roth revealed that the beginning of his acting career would have something to do with Jack Nicholson.
David Lee Roth directed several music videos for Van Halen hits, such as ‘Jump,’ ‘Hot For Teacher,’ ‘Just A Gigolo / I Ain’t Got Nobody,’ and ‘California Girls.’ He was the director of some of his own music videos as well. When he left Van Halen, Roth wanted to shoot a film titled ‘Crazy From The Heat.’ However, that plan didn’t go as he intended.
In 2002, Diamond Dave gave an interview to the A.V. Club and recalled his failing attempt to direct a film. Asked whether he would want to act in others’ movies, DLR said, “Not to any noticeable degree. You know, I entertain the same vision of, if Jack Nicholson calls me, desperate — ‘Dave, you gotta come down,’ — of course, I would. Just like you would.”
After this interview, David Lee Roth appeared in the famous TV series Sopranos as himself and contributed to the soundtracks of several movies. It would be pretty entertaining to see Roth on screen, as he is a natural-born star with an energetic and wild persona. However, it seems like Dave would feel encouraged to become an actor if a movie star like Jack Nicholson called him and told him ‘he has to come down.’
