Grief alone is a hard pill to swallow, but when you add the public’s constant gaze, it becomes unbearable. Iman, who was married to David Bowie and had a whirlwind romance that everyone admired from afar for 26 years, lost her husband to cancer in 2016. The supermodel, who still refers to Bowie as her husband, shared with the Guardian that she and her daughter didn’t have a safe space to grieve their loss privately.

Iman revealed how difficult it was to grieve privately after losing her husband and disclosed that it was even more challenging when people said they shared her pain. “It was too much,” she said. “Too much.”

“We lived a very private life, and suddenly it felt like a target on my and my daughter’s heads,” shared Iman about how quickly it got out of hand, and she was scared for herself and her daughter’s safety. “It got to the point where we had to leave our home in New York City because the public was always at the front door, which I admire. I get it.”

“But there was a point where it was like, ‘OK, go home now,’” admitted the rocker’s widow and shared how fans were violating their privacy and saying they felt the same pain. She recalled, “You had people who would take your picture, sell it and then come to you and say, ‘I feel your pain.’ And I’m like, ‘No, b*tch, you don’t feel my pain, get away from me.’”

The couple, who initially met on a blind date, soon became the ‘it’ couple, and Iman is extremely grateful to have spent 26 wonderful years filled with love and joy with the love of her life. Even several years after losing her husband, the supermodel and entrepreneur still has a lot of love for the musician and still sees Bowie as her husband.
