Dave Grohl has revealed that Taylor Momsen offered Foo Fighters her AC/DC opening spot. He shared the details during a live show. Foo Fighters ended up opening for AC/DC in St. Louis instead of the tour’s official opener, The Pretty Reckless. Momsen, the band’s frontwoman, later reacted to Grohl’s speech and the performance on social media.
Grohl first explained how the opportunity came about.
“Now let me just say. About a month ago, we got the call that three members couldn’t play the show in St. Louis,” Grohl said. “So I get the phone call from Taylor, the singer, and she goes, ‘What are you doing September 8th?’ I said, ‘I don’t know. What do you got?’ She said, ‘Would you like to open for AC/DC in St. Louis?'”
He then spoke about what AC/DC has meant to him since childhood.
“We only have a short period of time here, but I will say, when I was 11 years old and I went to a midnight movie and I saw the Let There Be Rock movie in a fucking movie theater at 11 years old, I didn’t know that rock and roll could be like that,” Grohl continued. “I didn’t know that rock and roll was sweat and blood and f*cking tears and every ounce of energy you have f*cking filled with breaking snare drums and Angus sucking oxygen on the side of the stage. I saw that movie. I was 11 years old. I was like, I want to do that for the rest of my f*cking life.”
Grohl also described how the show was postponed and how the new date came together.
“Unfortunately, the show was postponed, and tonight’s can’t happen tonight,” he said. “I got a call from my buddy Taylor, pretty around, and she said, ‘What are you doing Friday?’ And I’m like, ‘F*ck yes, I know what we’re doing.’ I said, I’m gonna live my childhood dream again tonight.”
He added, “And let me tell you something. When I walk off this f*cking stage, you know where I’m gonna be? Right there with all of you, jamming out to f*cking AC/DC as hard as I f*cking can.”
Momsen responded to Grohl’s remarks and the performance on social media.
“Thank you Dave and congratulations to AC/DC on their final show on their North American tour! Wish I could have been there just to watch it! LET THERE BE ROCK,” Momsen commented.
The comments came after Foo Fighters’ set during last night’s live show. Further updates may follow.
Last night’s show was the second time in less than a month that Foo Fighters have stepped in for The Pretty Reckless on the AC/DC bill. The first came in St. Louis. The full story of how both dates came about shows how quickly the plans changed.
AC/DC’s St. Louis stop on the Power Up tour was originally scheduled for September 8, 2026, at The Dome at America’s Center. The Pretty Reckless were slated to open the show but could not make the date. Momsen, a St. Louis native, had a separate commitment in Seattle. There, she was set to fill in for the late Chris Cornell as singer for a reunited Soundgarden. Foo Fighters took the opening slot on short notice and played a full set for the St. Louis crowd.
Foo Fighters had described the St. Louis appearance as “one night only.” That changed when AC/DC’s show at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, was postponed. The concert was originally set for Friday, September 25. Dangerous weather conditions caused by a nor’easter forced the postponement.
AC/DC rescheduled the date for Friday, October 2. The band also announced that Foo Fighters would join the bill. Grohl’s remarks about getting a call from Momsen about “Friday” refer to this rescheduled date.
For Grohl, the gigs carry a personal meaning that goes back to his childhood. He has long cited AC/DC’s Let There Be Rock concert film as a turning point in his life. He has described the film as “like nothing I had ever experienced before.” After Foo Fighters’ set, Grohl joined AC/DC for “Highway to Hell,” a moment he has called the fulfillment of a boyhood dream.
