Spiritbox frontwoman Courtney LaPlante has opened up about her journey from self-doubt to confidence. She shared candid reflections on her career trajectory in an interview with Kerrang.

LaPlante revealed her complex relationship with success and self-perception when asked about whether her 2021 self would believe where she is today.

“This whole thing is so weird, because sometimes I feel like, ‘Is this like a disguise?’ Like, am I pretending to be shocked at where we are today?” LaPlante said. “Because honestly, for my whole life I’ve just known that this is going to work out.”

The vocalist elaborated on the band’s collective confidence and the protective nature of their public self-doubt.

“All four of us have, even if we didn’t necessarily know it would be together,” she continued. “So, no, Courtney then would probably say she wouldn’t believe it, but deep down she’d have known. We have been so delusional forever. I think the self-doubt we project is almost a form of protection. Because yeah, I’ve always known I would be here.”

LaPlante also reflected on advice she would give to her past self about embracing confidence.

“If I could go back and talk to me from four years ago, I would try to tell her to be more outwardly confident, because deep down she knows,” she said. “I’d tell her to stop being so self-deprecating, because that’s not being polite or relatable, that’s you downplaying what you’ve achieved, and disrespecting people’s belief and investment in you.”

LaPlante’s confidence reflects the remarkable trajectory that has defined Spiritbox’s rise in the metal scene since their formation.

Wikipedia reported that Spiritbox was formed in 2017 by LaPlante and her husband and guitarist Mike Stringer after they left their previous band iwrestledabearonce. The band quickly distinguished itself by blending metalcore, progressive metal, and electronic elements with a deeply personal creative direction that would prove instrumental to their success.

The band’s unique approach to building their fanbase set them apart from traditional metal acts. Metal Radio documented that Spiritbox built their following via online platforms and music videos before beginning live shows in 2020. They effectively bypassed conventional promotion methods that most bands rely on.

Their breakthrough came with their debut full-length album Eternal Blue in 2021. Wikipedia noted that the album achieved major commercial success, reaching number 13 on the US Billboard 200. It featured some of their most popular songs that solidified their position in the metal landscape.

The band’s name itself carries deeper meaning that connects to their artistic vision. Last.fm revealed that Spiritbox is inspired by an actual device used to communicate with the spiritual realm by picking up radio frequencies. The band incorporated this concept musically by digitalizing recordings from a spirit box and embedding background static into tracks on their self-titled EP.

The interview highlights Spiritbox’s remarkable rise in the metal scene and LaPlante’s evolving perspective on success and authenticity.
