Brian May Discusses How ‘We Will Rock You’ Was Inspired By Queen Fans
During a recent interview with BBC’s Simon Mayo, Queen guitarist Brian May revealed what inspired him to write the iconic song ‘We Will Rock You’ and expressed his happiness for witnessing how much it has become a part of people’s life.
As you know, ‘We Will Rock You’ is one of the most famous rock songs of not only Queen but rock music as well. It is widely used in sporting events and has reached the ears of everyone around the world. It was written by Brian May and was featured in the band’s ‘News of the World’ album which was released in 1977.
It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2009 and is still widely enjoyed by millions. During his recent interview, Brian May looked back at what inspired him to write this song and reflected on the close relationship that Queen had with their devoted fanbase.
Seeing all their fans ‘crammed in’ and wishing to participate, May thought that it would be a good idea to come up with a song that their audience can perform with them by stomping, clapping, and singing a simple mantra. Brian May said that he’s very happy to see how this song has been bringing people together and expressed the pride that he feels for having written this song.
Brian May recalled the writing process of ‘We Will Rock You’ as follows:
“It was the simplest thing that I could think of at the time that a crowd could do together and it was born of our live shows where people were all crammed in and wanted to participate, and I just thought ‘What can they do? They can stamp, they can clap and they can sing a simple kind of mantra.’
The ‘We Will Rock You‘ is something simple for people to sing. It’s also something inspiring I think because it’s something that brings people together. So, yeah. I’m so happy that it became a part of not just sporting life but life in general for people.”
